Kaaza is piracy, but so was the birth of Hollywood, radio, cable TV, and even the music industry.

Do you have MP3s on your computer?  Did you download them from Napster? If you answered yes to any of these questions, chances are you took part in the illegal duplication and distribution of sound recordings (a.k.a piracy).

The use of peer-to-peer networks (e.g. Napster 1.0 or Kaaza) to download songs is illegal.  But if we put it in perspective, this is just like how early cable tv providers, in the 1940s, illegally redistributed broadcast network content.

This article in Wired will argue that early Napster users were not pirates, but innovators.

How the SUV ran over automotive safety.

I glance over that the gas station and I see regular octane gasoline for $2.20 and 9/10 of a cent per gallon in San Francisco today.  With my fifty mile commute to Pleasanton, California every workday, I am very glad to be in a Sub-Compact and not a Sport Utility Vehicle.

America has always been fascinated with large cars, but what do we see in an SUV? Is it cheaper? No, SUVs are has one of the highest profit margins out of any other car category. Is it faster? No, the Ford Expedition is no faster than a F-150 with a loaded bed. Is it safer? No, you are two times more likely to die in a Toyota 4Runner than in a Volkswagen Jetta. I do not have any ideas to why we are so fascinated with SUVs, but Malcolm Gladwell thinks he knows why.

This article by Malcolm Gladwell explores how our purchase of an SUV is more emotional than rational.
